Senior wrestler receives scholarship
Senior Jazmine Gallarzo has received thousands of dollars in scholarships to many universities, but she has made her decision and has signed to Wayland Baptist University.
Gallarzo has accomplished many goals she had for wrestling over the past four years. She has qualified for regionals the past two years. In February Jazmine won first place at regionals, and from there she made her way way to state.
At state, Gallarzo won three out of five of her matches. Gallarzo did not place, however she did meet the head coach, and some fellow wrestlers at Wayland.
Gallarzo said, “The head coach at Wayland seems to be very excited to be receiving a wrestler from El Paso. I am a little nervous to leave home, but it will be a great experience.”
Gallarzo hopes to do great in both wrestling and school when she attends Wayland, and she wants to set the example while attending Wayland. At Bel Air, besides wrestling, Gallarzo is a member of student council, H.O.S.A and the EMT program.
Coach Oscar Norez has been training Jazmine for success since she was a freshman.
Coach Norez says, “I am very proud of Jazmine. All the hard work she has put on the mat has really paid off.”
Gallarzo has been a part of Bel Air’s wrestling team for the past four years. Gallarzo knew from her freshman year that she was going to work harder than anyone else if she wanted her school paid for. Now that she has gotten what she wanted, she’s very proud of herself.
Gallarzo said, “I’m getting my school paid for doing what I love most. There is nothing more I can ask for. It is truly a gift.”
