Varsity boys basketball undefeated so far
The wins keep on rolling in for the varsity boys basketball team. They have nine wins, zero losses and two tournament championships under their belt already. Their recent games were in the Jefferson tournament this past weekend. The schools invited were Bel Air, Canutillo, Andress, Mt.View, Riverside, Fabens, Jefferson and Clint.
The first win came in against Canutillo 58-45. The leading scorers for the game were Isaiah Aguilera and Ruben Mendoza. Aguilera had 24 while Mendoza had 12. The following win came against tournament host, Jefferson High School, 60-43. The leading scorer for the game was Aguilera who had 14 points. The championship game was a rematch against Andress High school who eliminated Bel Air and gave them the only loss of the season last year in the regional quarterfinals. Bel Air scored the first 10 points and never trailed.
Mendoza was the leading scorer with 16 points while Aguilera chipped in with 12. Aguilera’s and Mendoza’s performances earned them All-Tournament honors. Aguilera was also named MVP of the entire tournament.
Aguilera reflected on his MVP performance.
“We had a great tournament and all of us contributed well. We worked as a team and it felt good to get a little revenge on Andress. I’m excited to have been named MVP of the tourney. It doesn’t stop here for us.”
Mendoza was also happy with his team’s hard work.
“We didn’t skip a beat at all during this tournament. We played with really great chemistry and it felt great to beat Andress. Being named All-Tournament was a great accomplishment. We want to keep this momentum going into district play.”
Coach Robert Dibler was proud of his team.
“It was a nice win for us. Andress is a good team. We played consistently throughout the entire tournament.”
The Highlanders have a non-district game scheduled for today against the Socorro Bulldogs. Tip off is set for 7 p.m.
