BØRNS puts on a wonderful performance for free
Last night, indie artist BØRNS put on a free show sponsored by KISS FM at Funkmeyer’s Rec Room. The show had some issues, a long wait, a small venue, and a short setlist. Despite all this it was a great experience put on by a very talented artist.
Born Garret Borns, BØRNS, has been gaining followers since the release of his first EP, titled Candy, in November of 2014. Since then he’s performed on several talk shows, toured with artists like Misterwives, Charli XCX, Bleachers, and Halsey, and performed at major music festivals like Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits, and just four days ago SXSW. He also released his debut album, Dopamine, in October of last year.
Though the show was supposed to begin at 6, doors didn’t open until around 7, which was unfortunate to the almost 200 people who had lined up outside the venue. Though the venue was small, it wasn’t uncomfortably crowded, and it gave the whole show a very intimate feel. Once inside the venue the wait was short, and in no more than ten minutes BØRNS was walking with his six-string guitar on stage accompanied by keyboardist/vocalist Misty Boyce and 12-string guitarist Connor Doyle. He was met by many screams including several shouts of “I love you, Garret,” which he said was “the definition of a warm welcome.”
BØRNS started off with his song “10,000 Emerald Pools.” Everyone in the crowd sang along. Both BØRNS and Boyce had voices so beautiful they were almost other wordly. BØRNS then performed “Fool,” “Holy Ghost,” “American Money,” and closed with his most popular song “Electric Love.” The combination of intoxicating vocals and gorgeous, catchy rhythms produced by both the keyboard and the guitars made wonderful acoustic renditions of the songs.
The show was amazing, almost to good to be true considering the tickets were free. With the amount of talent BØRNS has as an artist and a performer, it’s hard to imagine him not becoming a household name.
