Varsity softball team advances to playoffs
The Lady Highlanders completed the best of three series sweep against the Canutillo Eagles and have moved on to the area round of the Texas State Playoffs. The final score for the first game was 7-4 and the final score for the second game was 10-0, which ended in the 5th inning.
The team’s best inning was in the fourth. Defensive-wise, Shannon Powell quickly retired all three batters, three up and three out. Offensive-wise the team exploded with four runs.
D1 prospect and third baseman Yasmin Melero is excited about moving on to area.
“Canyon is a good team, we’re excited to be able to play in the area round of the playoffs. I know my team is going to give it their all.”
Outfielder Theresa Betancourt agreed with Melero.
“It was a great feeling being crowned bi-district champs. We don’t want our season to end anytime soon, so we have to push ourselves to the highest of our abilities in order for us to keep competing and win games.”
Assistant coach Cecilio Porras is sure they can make it to the next round.
“They are a good team, but I feel that we have a little bit more talent. The only team who will beat us is ourselves with mental mistakes and errors. If we can cut down on the mistakes, we will come out with a win.”
The game will be played at 6:30 p.m. MST in Odessa against Canyon High School.
