Track prepares for season
The Bel Air track team has set a goal to make it to regionals and beyond this year.
“Our season has just started, but I think we’ll have really good results this year,” senior Christian Borunda said. “Some of the runners have been training since last month, and hopefully I can make it to the state meet this year.”
Borunda participates in the 800-meter run and last year hit a personal record of 1:57. He is currently the number 12 runner in Texas for the 800-meter.
“My main focus this year is to hit a 1:56 to get into the top 10 runners in the state,” Borunda said.
Head coach Rene Silva has confidence in his runners this year as one of his runners―Brian Gonzalez―last year placed second at the state meet in the 400-meter dash. Silva has been working with Gonzalez to make sure he goes to the state meet once again.
“Last year we had a really good outcome. A lot of our boys placed in district and made it to regionals, and our girls have been working hard to also place in district,” Silva said. “We have a lot of returning runners and hopefully, with the work we’re doing, we’ll see an improvement from last year.”
The team’s top runners are Brian Gonzalez, Christian Borunda, and Areanna Carmona.
Senior Areanna Carmona said, “I have high hopes for this season being that it is my senior year. Every time I walk off the track I want to feel as if I did my best.”
