Girls varsity basketball senior night tonight
The varsity girls basketball team won their away matchup against Hanks High School Tuesday. It has an overall record of 18-8 and a district record of 9-3. They swept Hanks, the first time around 47-42 and 52-31 on Tuesday night.
Sophomore forward, Mariah Velasquez was happy with the team performance.
“The first time around we only won by five points. We wanted to not only win but dominate as well. We were on fast pace since tip off, and once we got a comfortable lead, we never looked back. It was a great team win.”
Senior night is on Friday against Horizon. They won the first matchup 44-42. Game is set to tip off at 7p.m.
Pamela Herrera, Sara Vicencio, Theresa Betancourt and Alejandra Guerra are the four seniors who are graduating this year.
Pamela Herrera, who didn’t play this year because of a season ending injury, reflected on her high school basketball career.
“Although I didn’t get to play this year, I had fun playing my sophomore and junior year. I enjoyed playing with my teammates. I’m very blessed to have been able to sign with Abilene Christian University to play basketball and further my education.”
Theresa Betancourt also reflected on playing basketball for Bel Air.
“Playing basketball for Bel Air these past four years have been great. We had lots of ups and downs, but I wouldn’t want to play with or for anyone else. We just have to enjoy these last few weeks we have left together as a team.”
Varsity Assistant Mike Dwyer had some words to say about the graduating seniors.
“I’ve helped coach these players since their freshman year. They’ve been a part of very good teams, and they’ve helped bring championships to Bel Air. I’m sure they will be successful in any future endeavors.”
