The Big Red Lady Highlander Girls basketball team went  to Alpine, Texas, yesterday to play against the Midland Lee Rebels in the first round of the Class 1-5A girls basketball playoffs.

Without Senior Point Guard, Alanis Candelaria whose season was cut short due to a knee injury, the Lady Highlanders overcame a 24-20 halftime deficit to win with the final score of 48-43 to move on to the second round of the Class 1-5A girls basketball playoffs.

The Lady Highlanders won their third straight Bi-District title. Led by junior Forward Shannon Powell, who scored 19 points and is averaging 13.6 points, 7.8 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 3.4 steals per game this year, improved to 12-8 in the year.

“We played as a team. This was our best game so far. During halftime we all shared our opinions to help one another out, then our amazing coach, Coach Olan came in and gave us the game plan. We came out in the second half pumped up, and we pulled through. The fourth quarter was our quarter,” junior Forward Shannon Powell said.

With yesterdays win the Lady Highlanders will now face the Arlington Martin Warriors Friday at 3:30 p.m. in Odessa in the area round of the Class 1-5A girls basketball playoffs.
